Paul Anka: The guys get shirts - LOL

Paul Anka – Lebanese Canadian, 1950’s teen idol, and semi-celebrity cleverly hidden from the public view for a few decades - has a new album out.

I suppose Anka deserves a little credit: At least he wasn’t a never-was. Even though most people has no clue who he is, he’s still got a name in the biz, and he knows how to use it to get air time.

This wouldn’t be so bad, if he had done something new and different and cool. But no, Anka has recorded songs by Van Halen, The Cure, Nirvana, and a host of other bands, which all arranged to a lounge/ swing beat.

When I listened to Paul Anka and his orchestra doing a downright embarrassing rendition of Van Halen's "Jump", all I thought of was "what the hell?", followed by "what's so great about this guy?". Granted, the orchestra was spectacular. But Anka himself just seemed like a two cent lounge singer with a smarmy expression and annoying mannerisms. Is there something I'm missing?
